Viliv S5 UMPC Gadget

Viliv S5 is an Ultra-Mobile PC that functions as a mini netbook with very rich features. This gadget is produced Yukyung Technologies, a company based in Korea who are involved in the mobile device and communications market sector with strengths in technology development, product design, manufacturing quality, as well as solution design and implementation. Founded in 1999, Yukyung developed the brand called Viliv for their Ultra-Mobile PC (UMPC) line up.

 Viliv S5 is a product which features a very attractive 4.8-Inch WSVGA display, 16 GB SSD, and an Intel AtomTM Silverthorne 1.2GHz CPU. Compared to Pocket PC’s, this UMPC has much better battery life of 7-hours of use and 200-hour standby time.  Viliv S5 uses very little battery power in the standby position. Even more impressive, Viliv S5 can return to the Windows XP desktop in a matter of 5 seconds. The Viliv S5 could play Divx movies for 4 hours 35 minutes.  It should be noted that this could be caused by the CPU-Decoded video and CPU performance that Viliv has. The test of CPU usage and Internet usage with a high level on the S5 resulted on usage lasting for 3 hours and 45 minutes. This is a good indication of battery life. In general, Viliv S5 has very good battery performance, especially for devices of this size and processing power.

Video streaming from the Internet could also be done and can last for 4 hours and 15 minutes. The result is very impressive, S5 effectively use almost no power to stay in standby mode. You can leave a S5 in stand-by mode and only takes 5 seconds to reactivate Windows XP and it applies to many weeks. Most UMPCs and MIDs last only 2-3 days in standby mode, so this is one significant step forward for UMPC’s.

Viliv S5 can play MP3 (with the screen on and Wifi off) for over 8 hours. At the time of using Wifi or 3G, you can stay online for 5-6 hours so it’s very useful for doing many activities such as instant messaging, VoIP Phone, streaming videos etc.

As a PMP, S5 should be able to compete with other high-end devices.  Viliv comes with Cyberlink H.264 codec. The standard Divx and WMV decoding on Viliv is higher than the general settings.. In theory, it is a platform that could work on the H.246 capabilities and could also play Blu-Ray formats.

S5 is a very unique product that delivers full rich web experience. The S5 itself supports 720p HD video playback, and features integrated Wifi, Bluetooth, and GPS. The impressive UI technology includes on-screen keyboard with haptic feedback like a smartphone, as the Viliv Cube UI overlay that allows you to select up to 36 bubbles (5 categories, 180 total programs) and assign them to any of the available bubbles, even arrange programs by type so you can keep your productivity software separate from your play software, and switch between them with the flick of your finger. Quality & material used in this device is very good.

3D performance is not one of the best features of this device. Performance may be enough for Google Earth and iTunes, but not good enough for a variety of games that require a good 3D capability.
